Does a RED-Certified Radio Module Make Your Product Compliant?
EKTOS – Using a RED-compliant radio module can simplify product development. But does it guarantee compliance of the finished product?
EKTOS – Using a RED-compliant radio module can simplify product development. But does it guarantee compliance of the finished product?
Not necessarily. While a pre-assessed radio module can reduce development and testing efforts, integrating it into a new product may introduce additional compliance challenges.
What Does RED Compliance Actually Cover?
The EU Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) sets requirements for radio equipment, including radio spectrum use, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and health and safety.
A compliant module has been assessed under specified conditions. However, the finished product must still meet all applicable RED requirements, even when it contains a compliant module.
Where Can Integration Create Problems?
Several design choices can affect compliance:
- Antenna selection and placement: Changes can influence radio performance and emissions.
- EMC and electronics: Power supplies, processors and other components may introduce interference.
- Mechanical design: Enclosures, shielding and nearby metal structures can affect antenna performance.
- Documentation: Antenna specifications, software settings and integration conditions must be considered.
How Can Engineers Reduce Compliance Risks?
Start evaluating compliance early in development.
Review the module manufacturer’s documentation, verify antenna and integration requirements, and assess how the complete product may affect radio and EMC performance.
Early testing and a risk-based compliance assessment can help identify problems before they become costly design changes.
The key takeaway: A compliant radio module is a valuable starting point, but it does not replace compliance assessment of the finished product.
